Exhibition: Vues de Girgenti

From 15th July 2011 until 30th November 2011
Vues de Girgenti, photo exhibition
The photo exhibition “Vues de Girgenti Viaggio fotografico ad Agrigento 1850/1870" is open to public from 15th July 2011 at the ex Collegio dei Filippini in Agrigento.
The exhibition is about reportages made by photographers that visited Girgenti during the second half of the XIX century, when the city, already a stage of the Grand Tour, was an attractive destination for the first photopgraphers that came here:Eugène Piot, Gustave de Beaucorps, Eugène Sevaistre, Paul Berthier, Jean Andrieu, Giorgio Sommer and Robert Rive.
Their photos, together with these by the Girgentine Giuseppe Gallego, are extraordinary material for their historical and documentary value, useful for a better knowledge of Girgenti, of its history and traditions.
The subjects of the photos are the classical monuments and the landscape that surround them, but are also interesting the evidences of the modern city and the images about sulphur mines, that offer a considerable documentation of the urban and architectural reorganization and the changes of Girgenti from the XIX century.

This area, home to age-old traditions and a deeply rooted faith, offers many evocative events over the Easter period.
